How to Keep Your Car’s Engine in Good Condition

An engine is like the heart of a car. It needs to run smooth in order to keep your car moving. I can’t emphasize more on how important it is to keep the engine fit and functioning efficiently. Here are 7 engine maintenance tips that’ll help your engine run forever:

Changing Oil at Regular Intervals

This is the least you can do. Engine oil sufficiently lubricates all moving parts and minimizes wear and tear. It also traps dirt, dust  and sediments and keeps it away from vital places. Make sure to check the oil level monthly and replenish if the level is low.

The grade and change interval of the oil should be followed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The oil filter is equally important which helps to strain all the debris of the oil and stops the regulation in the engine. This keeps the engine running smoothly and efficiently.

Check for Oil Leaks

The reasons for oil leaks are many—degraded engine gaskets, oil seals, bad connections, or oil pan leaks. You may identify such leaks either through a smell or by opening the hood of your vehicle. You may also check the ground to identify any stains caused due to the leakage. If you have detected a leak, it is necessary to address it immediately. You may take your car to your local trusted mechanic for repairs.

Keep an Eye on the Fuel Filters.

The fuel filters play an important role in ensuring clean fuel injection into the engine. This guards the engine against the build-up of damaging deposits and prevents the emergence of specks in the fuel supply. Fuel filters stop any substances or undesirable particles from forming, which can be destructive to the engine

Get Frequent Tune-Ups.

Frequent tunings of the engine’s carburetors is necessary. Also change the spark plugs and check the cables, ignition wires, cap and rotor. However, newer models need less regular tune-ups, as the majority of modern cars don’t have the ignition wires or distributors found in older cars but instead use lifelong spark plugs. The fuel injection system can be tuned up by using the special injection cleaning solutions; this usually helps to improve the mileage of the vehicle.

Replacing Spark Plugs and Wires

The spark plug acts as a fire starter. It burns the mixture of  air and fuel inside the cylinder and has a long life. So it requires almost no maintenance. The engine can retain it for a long period of time, by minimal maintenance.

Sometimes it doesn’t need to be replaced.  However, some soot builds up around the electrodes over time, so some cleaning service can be of great help.

Don’t Keep Going on Reserve Fuel

Petrol contains sediments which settle at the bottom of your tank. Years of running and there will be definitely a layer of crap which shouldn’t reach the engine. Running on low fuel pulls this junk into the fuel pump which could cause a lot of wear. Instead of just praying it doesn’t reach the engine, top up your tank and save yourself repair/ replacement cost of the fuel filter and pump.

Keep Your Belts On

No we’re not talking about dressing etiquette. We’re talking about the rubber belts on your engine that run all sorts of vital components. The function of a belt can vary from car to car, but some of their main responsibilities are running the fan, water pump, alternator and air conditioner. You don’t need to know what all those things are, but you do need to know that the belts on your engine run at least some of them.
