During this pandemic, it’s wisest to stay at home and be safe. To fight off Covid-19 and keep your family safe, following the rules of lockdown is necessary. To keep ourselves healthy, we should take every possible measure so why not take care of our vehicles?

Keeping your car stationary for a long time may cause issues you may not even realize till it is too late. You would want your car to be ready for the post lockdown regime and hence, here are some helpful DIY tips for car maintenance during lockdown.

Avoiding Brake Corrosion

A car isn’t meant to sit idle or any vehicle for that matter. This inactivity may cause your brake to corrode,  making it a rather unsafe and expensive affair to handle. The reason for corrosion is road salt and dirt sticking to your car’s underbody. To avoid this, wash the underbody with a hosepipe and minimize the potential corrosion.

Cleaning of Battery Terminals

Dying battery does not always mean replacement. The inactivity may cause it to corrode a little bit. Make sure if the corrosion is not too much and you can clean them with the help of a mixture of baking soda and water with a wire brush. Keep checking your battery once in a while to make sure everything is fine.

Clean the Headlights

Let’s state the obvious first and get it out of the way. Foggy headlights are not safe. It takes a lot of scrubbing to restore the sparkle in your headlights. Clean the headlights with soap water. Cleaning the wet headlights with a soft cloth with a small amount of toothpaste will do the job. You can also mix the toothpaste with baking soda to get better results. Scrub the surface keeping it wet and finish it by applying a sealant.

Clean the Air Vents

The last thing someone wants right now is getting sick. Dusty air vents can cause allergic reactions. Bad air quality can be harmful to people especially those with lung diseases and who are hyper-allergic. Using toothbrushes or cotton swabs are ideal to clean the vents. You can also use long brushes often used by painters.

Lubricate Window Tracks

Water can seep into the window tracks and make it difficult when you try to open or close the window. This usually happens when you wach your car regularly and yet not use it much. The simple solution to this problem is to lubricate your car windows yourself at home with silicon or dry Teflon spray lubricant. Keeping this lubricant in your car may be beneficial for you in the future if you travel a lot. Let it drip down and clean the glass to remove the spray on the glass.

There are a lot of minute details which shouldn’t be ignored if you want to prolong your the working life of your car. Keeping your car healthy and ready for the post lockdown regime can save you a lot of trouble and money. Maintaining your car at home prevents big expenses as well.
