How and Why You Should Clean Your Engine Bay

The engine bay of your car will become more and more soiled the more you drive it.

Since they are exposed to all the environmental elements that come with driving in windy or rainy conditions, engines can become quite soiled very rapidly.

Cleaning the engine bay is a quick and easy task that you can complete on your own in as little as 30 minutes if you intend to sell your car or just want to take care in all elements of your car.

The first step is to locate a suitable location to clean your engine bay.

You must find an appropriate area to do the task because it is prohibited to dump contaminated water, such as oil, coolant, or degreaser, into city sewers.

Engine bay cleaning is usually an option at self-serve car washes.

As an alternative, putting a plastic sheet under your car will enable runoff to be gathered in a container and properly disposed of.

You can also use a biodegradable degreaser, as we demonstrate in the video below. As long as you are not attempting to clean up oil leaks or other fluids with it, you are okay to use it at home.

It is better to let the engine idle for a short while so that it can cool down.

The degreaser and other cleaning solutions will dry fast in a hot engine and create unattractive stains all over the engine.

The engine bay of your car will become increasingly dirty and grimy the more you drive it.

To clean the engine bay, you will need specific products.

These consist of:

  • Cleaning tools
  • Gloves and protective eyewear
  • Cleaner for biodegradable engines
  • a plastic bag
  • Water, preferably from a garden hose or pressure washer
  • Microfiber towels
  • Protectant for rubber and vinyl

Cover any parts, such as the alternator, coil, and spark plugs, that you want to keep dry with the plastic bags.

It’s best to keep these components completely dry because getting water in them could lead to damage or starting problems. After you’re done, make sure to take the plastic bags off!

The third step is to begin cleaning.

First, use the high-pressure washer or hose to thoroughly rinse out the engine bay, moving forward from the back and making sure to reach as much of it as you can.

Use a lower pressure setting on the pressure washer because a higher pressure could force water into connectors and other components, potentially leading to problems.

If your car has sound-absorbing matting on the underside of the bonnet, it is better to avoid soaking it because the added weight could eventually cause it to sag and fall apart.

Once you are satisfied with the rinse, thoroughly spritz all surfaces with degreaser and begin scrubbing, paying special attention to any persistent stains.

Give the degreaser some time to sit so that the dirt and grime can be broken down.

The next step is to rinse the degreaser solution off using a power washer or hose.

If there are any trouble spots, concentrate on cleaning them with the spray bottle and scrub brush.

It’s time to let the engine compartment air dry. The simplest solution is to leave the bonnet open, particularly on a warm bright day.

If you have access to one, you can also use a garden blower or compressed air to get rid of the water.

It’s time to take the plastic bags off the engine now that it’s completely dry. Additionally, you can get specialised rubber and vinyl protectant to make the plastics gleam like new!

Apply the product evenly in the engine bay using a foam applicator, and then wipe away any extra with a microfiber towel.

You can be proud that you have the best-looking engine on the street once you’ve cleared out all the muck and grime from your engine bay.

Regularly performing this cleaning will keep the engine bay looking brand-new, assist in finding any leaks, and demonstrate to potential buyers how well-kept your car is.
