How to Safely Jump Start Your Car

There are a lot of “misconceptions” about jump starting a car. Many individuals think that if they jump start their car, they may destroy it.

This may be the case, and reading your owner’s handbook is the best method to determine whether it is safe to do so. When your car won’t start, there will be a section on jump starting and other safety measures.

If your car is a hybrid, it is advised against jump starting it because it could harm the hybrid system and result in electrocution.

Finding the battery is the next step after deciding whether it is safe to jump start your car.

The battery is often found under the hood of cars, while some modern models place them in the trunk or, in some European models, under the passenger seat.

To enable vehicle jump starting, these cars will have specific tabs under the bonnet. Once more, you can find the placement of these tabs in your owner’s handbook.

It’s time to connect the jumper cables when you’ve found the battery or tabs.

The clamps should be free of corrosion and other debris, and the wires should be in perfect condition.

Even better are cables that have a built-in surge protector since they can prevent harm from improper lead assembly or from a spike when the leads are first connected.

Make sure the car you are using for a jumpstart is off before you connect.

The fully charged battery should first be connected to the positive lead of the flat battery (which can be distinguished by a red border around the terminal or a red cover over the terminal).

The negative cable should then be connected to the flat car by attaching it to the engine block on an unpainted metal component under the hood.

It increases the possibility of the battery exploding if it is connected directly to the negative terminal, albeit this is extremely rare.

Connect the negative cable to the negative battery post on the fully charged battery once you have located a suitable place.

Once the cables are firmly fastened, turn on the engine of the car from which you are receiving the jump start and let it run for 2 to 5 minutes to charge the flat battery.

Once the flat vehicle has been started and is moving, unplug the jumper cables starting with the negative cable from the fully charged vehicle.

DO NOT

Allowing the positive and negative cables to touch could result in an electrocution and a spark.

Remove the cords from the flat car after being separated from the vehicle, this time beginning with the negative cable.

For the alternator to properly charge the battery, the flat vehicle must be allowed to run for at least 30 minutes.

If you ever find yourself stranded with a dead battery, just follow these straightforward instructions. Don’t forget to always say “thank you” to anyone who stopped to give you a boost!
